Mediacorp's HD Channel on Air

Just in case you are not aware, Mediacorp's HD Channel "HD ONE SINGAPORE" has been on air for the past few days. I am able to receive the signal just like what I did with TV mobile, CNA, Digital 5 and Digital 8.

This new channel is broadcasted on UHF Channel 36 (610MHz), 8K mode, QAM 64 modulation. It's audio bitrate is at 384Kbps and broadcasted in AC3.

The broadcasts are in H.264 (AVC) High Profile Level 4. This means high-quality images at a very high bitrate. Audio is transmitted in 5.1 AC3 (Dolby) for true surround-sound.

To receive this HD channel "HD ONE SINGAPORE" you would need a DVB-T device, be it a set top box or a USB, PCI-E card that can receive terrestial broadcast. Next, you would have to update the firmware to support AVC codec at a cost. Some devices will not be able to support the new codec depending on its design.

Hi. Can I know what model of DVB-T tv tuner you're using to receive the h264-hd?

It is a device made in UK which I decline. The brand is nebula.

Like most brands, they're also working on experiment H.264 avc for HD.

Are you referring to the Nebula Digitv PCI? This is only a digital tuner with no HD support.

i have just invested a lot of money on the Nera Digital TV receiver in my car... and can receive Digital 5, 8 and CNA... I noticed one more HDV on Mediacorp too.. but it's blank, no transmission... Now i am worried if once HDTV goes live, the digital TV Mobile on Mediacorp will be withdrawn.. and there goes my money.. what do you think?

Why you invest in this kind of thing where technology is not really ready?

I think the signals will continue, at least for TV mobile.

I think Mediacorp should deliver the HD version in Mpeg2 too so taht existing receivers can view it too.

btw, what brand?

The brand is NERA... www.neratel.com.sg ..

it's the same one used in all SBS bus.. the reception is ok.. not bad at all...

I sent mediacorp an email but there been no reply since...

So did mediacorp reply ? I doubt your existing equipment will be able to receive AVC high profile.

I recently bought a 2-Tech DVB-T usb device but I seems to only be able to receive TV Mobile. The rest of the cable programs can see but cant open (subscription needed I think) But how about Channel 5 and 8? I cant seem to detect their presence or is it because the antenna is not placed in the right position?

Where do you live and test the device? Your antenna might not be powerful enough or the signal strength is too low at your area

Just managed to get MediaCorp HDTV working on my PC with:
- Pinnacle PCTV 310e (S$189 from Challenger)
- DVBViewer (US$19)
- DVBViewer H.264 kit (free download once you buy DVBViewer)
- PowerDVD 7 Deluxe (US$69.95)

Very jerky though. Need a faster PC and graphics card. :-)

Got this config from the discussion here.

any screenshots?

Here's the screenshot, literally. They are replaying the same Charlie's Angels 2 clip all day long.

Just discovered that my PC really can't play H.264/AVC well. Need to upgrade. Still, the picture quality is really amazing though.

Luppy, what LCD TV did you use?
I just installed PowerDVD and playbacked a recorded clip from my PC> Yes it is jerky even with my P4 3.0GHz HT with a ATi 9500Pro graphics card

I'm using a 32" BenQ 3250. Bought it about a year ago.

hdtv said...

What resolution does it support up to ?

luppy said...

It supports up to 1360 x 768.

Luppy, does your Pinnacle tuner come with an external antennae? Is it good enough or did you get a third party high gain antennae for it. Lastly, since you are already using the DVBviewer to decode, why are you still using PowerDVD 7.0 then.

luppy, where u stay. i can't seems to receive any signal with my dvb-t card in my area. (siglap)

hdtv said...

I posted a screen capture of HDTV broadcast from mediacorp

<< does your Pinnacle tuner come with an external antennae? >>

Nope I plugged the tuner into my condo's master antenna. Perfect reception.

<< Lastly, since you are already using the DVBviewer to decode, why are you still using PowerDVD 7.0 then. >>

PowerDVD provides the H.264 AVC codec. BTW PowerDVD is supposed to accelerate AVC decoding with selected Nvidia cards. Doesn't work with mine though.

<< where u stay. i can't seems to receive any signal with my dvb-t card in my area. (siglap) >>

Telok Blangah. The condo master antenna received the signal perfectly.

luppy, which NV graphics card are you using?

If I am not wrong, current NV or ATi cards can't accerelate H264 highprofile

luppy have you try using CoreAVC (H264/AVC Decoder).... they are releasing a new version sometime next week that fix some issue with DVBViewer.

BTW, anyone .... any idea of HD signal in Pasir Ris.

hdtv said...

Scorpio, don't think pasir ris that side got HD signal off air.

> CoreAVC (H264/AVC Decoder).... they are releasing a new version sometime next week that fix some issue with DVBViewer.

CoreAVC isnt free if i remember correctly.

thanks hdtv ..... too bad isn't it .... was not selected for StarHub trial either.

was playing with BBC Sample ... which is similar to that of MediaCorp HD .... H264/AC3 but the resolution being 1440x1080 pixel with 16:9 AR Signal. So any idea whether our HD transmission is 1080i/50 @ 1920x1080 pixel or similar to that of BBC.

used dvbviewer with coreavc to playback the BBC sample .... it is sure jerky and takes 95-100% cpu with P4 3.2 HT CPU.

btw, have u or luppy try capturing (recoding) to disk.

Luppy, can you share your config?

I've installed KWorld DVB-T 355U, DVBViewer 3.5 w/H.264kit and are able to received TVMobile reception.

However when I tune to 610MHz, I get a blank screen. When I adjust the Video PID and Audio PID, I get a blank screen but it's showing 1920x1088 25fps blank screen.

Appreciate any help you can render to help setup.

Thx.

BTW, got PDVD7 installed as well.

I think you guys can discuss it here at this url

hdtv noobie,

If you receive a blank screen that means it is not working.

Have you got it working/??

Actually you just need to run a BDA compliant tuner and Winfast DTV. hdtvsg has posted information about it on the hdtvsg.blogspot.com
