My experience of Singtel MIO TV

Today, Singtel's contractor came to install the mio tv. It was scheduled for 4-6pm and they called me at 4.30pm saying that they will arrive in 45 mins time. They finally reached my place at 5.30pm when I was watching Starhub's Thai horror movie.

They were quite delighted when they found out that i got most of the required items ready. That includes the necessary power lines, ADSL2+ modem, cleared out desk for them to work on.

Installation was fairly easy. The guy first tested my line and insisted that if it falls below the threshold value, he will not install it. I agreed and he found out that the S/N ratio is very good despite it is my extension line from my room to the main hall. On top of that, I saw from his program, it was showing a steady 21Mbps. He said if it falls below 19Mbps, he would suggest that I don't get it installed.

After upgrading the firmware of the set top box, he tested the set top box with his 2Wire modem. Everything works well. Next, he updates the firmware of my Thomson ADSL2+ modem. After a while, he said to me, the firmware upgrade failed and he immediately replaced it with another set from the van.

This second Thomson modem works took a while to SYNC the ADSL line. What shocked me is that the Singtel mio set top box based on WINCE actually took 2 mins to initialise and boot up!!!

To my horror, the video delivery was pixelated and stopped and squeaked, just like what i usually experience on the TV mobile on buses. I told them, that is not acceptable. Judging from the experience with 2Wire, he claimed that it could be a modem issue. Ok, a third modem is swapped in. I left the TV on with HDMI connected to the Set top box. Everything seems perfect, I signed the papers and they happily left.

This time round, everything seems fine. I left it on and was showing off to my parents, that is High Definition TV. I then switch everything off. The horror begun right after dinner. I turned on the ADSL2+ modem and after a while the Set top box. The Set top box power led lights keeps blinking for 2 mins and settle down. Ok, i ca n see CH 5 and i wanted to try out the VOD by Jean Claue Vandam. Gosh, squrish blocks appear just 30 secs. I even got a message "VOD not available, please try again later".

I tried changing channels, everything doesn't seem to work anymore. Suddenly I can see CH 8, and then the programme just got stucked there.

To be continued .......

Hi Bro,
I also got my MIO TV install on last sat. At 4 plus.

He come to my bedroom to install.
Check the phone connection and told mi that it fail the requirement for the bandwidth.
He will be cancel the installation.
I was SHOCK after 2 Weeks of waiting. I was quite upset.

He later sugguested the living room connection. The phone line socket meet the required bandwidth.
He sugguested to mi to use a HomePlug for room. So no choice but to buy and ended up a 6 month contact.

After a the installation done. I switch off the power supply of everything. The moment I switch back the MIO TV box. To my HORROR.
I see it flashing and no image at all. NO manual NO person to guide mi. I am so angry. No choice I try a few time. I see WHEEL image appear. More Wheel images ...

To be continue ....
And

21mbps is fast enough. I don't have any ADSL broadband service sharing the phone line.

I was expecting this kind of service from Singtel to be honest.

I'm betting that your attempts to call Singtel to fix this problem will face lots of problems at well.

To call them, you will be put on hold for a really long time. And in the worst case scenario, the problem won't be fixed even if a technical guy come down twice or more.

This was what happened to me when I got my 10mbps connection 2 years ago. And the problems continued throughout the 2 years, and I just recently switch to Starhub since they have a notebook promotion.

I solved the problem by myself. I reset the devices to factory defaults and everything seems to be fine.

rebooting your box many times causes it to re-download the firmware hence the wheel images. you should let it complete the boot-up sequence the first time round, takes 2-3 minutes i think. the flashing part is normal during bootup

hdtv said...

Hi the wheel chair is the loading phase. Let it continue. It takes around 2 mins to complete.

Does it reminds you of WINDOWS XP that you installed bloatware on it and forget to defrag :)

Thanks god that i dont have any problem with MioTV so far.

hdtv said...

Dont' tell me your set top box took 2 secs to "boot up"?

MaungMaung said...

lol since day one i never needed to boot my box as i dont really switch off my things.

hdtv said...

Well. it is a good habit to turn off any electrical appliances if not in use. The amt. of electricity you can save is a lot more than you can imagine.

Secondly, if you do switch it off, taking 2 mins to boot up is way beyond acceptable range. Starhub box took around 3 secs.

They came to change the SET TOP BOX as it was unable to save the state of 1080i after it is turned off and on the next day. Definnitely a bug.

The new STB solved this bug but there are some other bugs.

MaungMaung said...

well i never switch off electrical appliances since one of my CRT tv spoiled due to surge at the start.

what kind of bugs you are still having? Motorola should have look at their quality control. This is unacceptable.

If you use HDMI, problems creeps in.

Everyday you power up the box, it resets back to 4:3. So you have to set it to 1080i or 720p every morning.

When LCD TV not in use, I put it to standby. When I wake up the LCD TV, the channel on screen shows only the top portion with the bottom in pink/purple colour.

When I change my LCDTV dfrom HDMI mode to any other modes and back to HDMI, everything is ok. this is really weird.

MaungMaung said...

its true that HDMI with Mio box still have problems. I also have problem whenever i put my LCD tv to standby mode and on again. Now i just put both units to standby mode at the same time by using mio remote whenever i don't need it and i don't have problem anymore.

hdtv said...

Putting both to standby mode is even worse.

When you turn both on again. I will either see the screen being halved or the MIO TV (Purple screen) with the audio of the previous channel selected (say HD5, CH U).

It is a big bug. Sync with HDMI isn't working. The funny thing is Singtel recommends me to use RCA! I was saying WTF, why would i wnat to view HD problems using RCA with a 40 inches HDTV??

MaungMaung said...

yesterday i tried with HDMI cable i got from play-asia and looks like it has some issue. When I switch on both TV and box from standby mode, my TV say no signal! It doesn't happen every time though. I will see whether it still happen or not when I go back from work. Very weird.

hdtv said...

haha, see. problem arises..
The worst is yet to be ...

When you wake up the box, the screen will freeze or split into half. The box will auto reboot...

Tell me what your experience is.

MaungMaung said...

Lol Mio Box is like time bomb waiting to blow anytime! I think my problem was due to cable because it didn't happen with old HDMI cable i had. Only after changing to new HDMI cable i got from playasia this problem arise.

Since the TV is saying no signal, i just press random buttons on remote and the box reboot automatically but still no signal. So I unplug and plug in HDMI cable and i get the signal back. After that i don't touch anything because i wanted to watch movies before i slept lol. I will see what happen tonight.

hdtv said...

btw, what LCD TV are you using? Looks like we are not alone with HDMI issues.

MaungMaung said...

I am using Samsung R71 version. Do you have any HDMI problems with other devices other than Mio Box? I only have mio box so i don't know whether its entirely mio box issue or general HDMI issue.

hdtv said...

I used a samsung DVD upscaler player 1080 with no issues at all with HDMI.

I also tried connecting my PC with HDMI interface to the LCD TV and there aren't such weird issues.

I can more or less conclude it is the poor design of the BOX. They didn't really do a proper validation test before pushing it down to the market.. Really sickening.

Please check another thing, if you power off and on (the next day) does it switch back to 4:3 ? My previous box has this bug, the new one still does it once in a while.

Every morning i have to set it to 1080i or 720p, save it.

Setting the box to standby mode is useless. Once it wakes up the box by remote, with pink, I can only hear the audio with no video.

MaungMaung said...

may be by updating the firmware, the problems will be solved but instead of doing that Singtel's solution is use RCA cable which is unacceptable. May be these singtel ppl dont know whats HDMI also.

I did power off and on my box last night but my display setting didnt change. Why i power on and off is because after i rent a movie it is only playing preview! Only after restarting my box, i can see full movie. Another issue perhaps.

hdtv said...

This is really bad. I wonder when can they upgrade the firmware.

I haven't hear from them so far.

hmmm..... i didn't know that there are so many problems with Mio tv...

I juz had it installed this evening. It was working fine when the technician demo it to me.

But, thinking that leaving the setup box on is wasting electricity, i turned the set off, together with the Aztech homeplug that is connected to it (but my ADSL modem was still on). I dun think i'll wana on my modem 24/7. Afraid of fire hazards.

A few hours later, i turned on the box, and the box rebooted.
A single wheel appeared, then a few minutes later, 2 wheels appeared. I waited for more than 15min, nothing happened. The screen juz remained there like that. I rebooted the box many times, but same thing happens. Wonder what's wrong...
A bad start and a spoilt image on Mio tv...

So how is it now? Is ti working?

I have just subscribed to mio tv yesterday and had no current problems, except until i on it today, and i get sound, with no vid, after reconnecting it several times, it finally worked, big bug.
Not to mention that singtel is not doing its best to update the set up box's firmware, 'caus as you can see, behind the set up box, there is a usb port, and if you have the motorolla set up box( without mio firmware) you can record tv onto the removable disk drive...

Need some help on my new Mio TV set top box. How do I confirm that I'm watching a HD broadcast? Are there any settings on the set top box for resolution settings?

hdtv said...

If you watch the HD channels, you are sure it is in HD.

try HD5 and watch out the schedule to see when is it showing HD programmes. If you check with the normal CH 5, it will look different. One seemed compressed while the HD5 will have the correct aspect ratio.

Thanks...but it seems mine is the other way around. On the 16:9 mode, I see black bars on the top and bottom when watching HD5. I use a HDMI cable and my TV is a Panasonic TX-32LE8MS

hdtv said...

btw, is your mio box actually outputting in 1080i mode?

Have you checked the settings in your mio tv box.

I think that could be the problem. Sorry for the trouble - but how can I change the setting in the mio set top box?

Ok, I finally figured out how to switch mode to 1080i on the settop box. It was set to 4:3. Tks!!!
