Singapore and Hong Kong – StarHub and Celestial Pictures jointly announce today that Celestial Classic Movies will be available in Singapore via StarHub TV from 25 January 2009. With this addition of Celestial Classic Movies, StarHub will further extend its lead in the provision of Chinese TV content in Singapore, as this marks the launch of its 25th Chinese linear channel and fourth dedicated Chinese movie channel.

Celestial Classic Movies is a 24-hour Chinese movie channel packaged by Hong Kong’s Celestial Pictures. The channel presents Chinese movie masterpieces produced from the 1950s to the 2000s, mainly from the renowned Shaw Production which has the largest library of Chinese movie titles in the world.

The wide variety of movies on Celestial Classic Movies - covering action, thrillers, romance, comedy and historic epics, will give viewers access to some of the best Chinese films ever produced, and definitive movie moments from master directors John Woo, Yuen Woo Ping, Tony Ching Siu Tung, Chang Cheh, King Hu, Liu Chia Liang and Chu Yuan. Viewers will also be treated to skilful deliveries by leading artistes such as Jet Li, Chow Yun Fat, Stephen Chow, Cheng Pei Pei, Maggie Cheung, Andy Lau, Ti Lung and Gordon Liu.

To celebrate the launch of Celestial Classic Movies and to add cheer for Chinese viewers during the Lunar New Year period, StarHub TV customers can enjoy complimentary access to the new channel from 6am on 25 January to 12 February 2009! During this free preview period, StarHub TV customers using the High Definition (HD), HubStation, HubStation HD or digital set-top box simply need to tune in to Channel 64 to enjoy the quality movies for free.

StarHub TV customers who wish to continue their access to Celestial Classic Movies on Channel 64 following the free preview can call 1633 from 10 February, to subscribe to the channel at a monthly fee of $6 ($6.42 with GST). New customers can call 1630 to take on a StarHub TV package. To encourage more customers to subscribe to Celestial Classic Movies, StarHub will offer a 50 per cent discount off the channel’s monthly subscription fee for the first three months, to all existing and new StarHub TV customers who sign up for the channel between 10 February to 23 March 2009

LAS VEGAS, US - THE convergence of television and the Internet quickened on Wednesday as LG Electronics unveiled high-definition sets linked to YouTube as well as the US online movie rental service Netflix.

The South Korean electronics giant kicked off a day of Consumer Electronics Show press conferences by touting its latest technology and partnerships with Internet titans Yahoo, YouTube, and Netflix.

'We will be the first manufacturer to add Netflix content to television,' said LG chief technology officer Woo Paik, considered by some the 'father of HD TV' for his pioneering work on high-definition technology.

We will add support for YouTube and form partnerships with other online video providers.' LG and online movie rental giant Netflix displayed 'Broadband HDTVs' embedded with Netflix streaming software embedded in the TV, allowing users to stream movies directly from Netflix with no external device.

'That's a goal of course, to get movies to the TV,' Netflix vice-president Steve Swasy said after the press conference.

'We think DVDs will be around another five to ten years, but we want to be where things are going in the future.' Netflix still makes the bulk of its money mailing DVD movie rentals to members that create film preference lists at the California company's website, according to Mr Swasy.

Flat-panel LG TV sets with 'NetCast Entertainment Access' also let viewers watch video streamed from Google-owned YouTube.

A Yahoo Widget Engine uses mini computer applications to link LG televisions to the California Internet firm's news, sports and weather websites along with other online properties.

LG showed off the plasma and liquid-crystal display (LCD) Broadband HDTVs a day before the official start of a premier Consumer Electronics Show (CES) being held in Las Vegas this week.

'LG's new capability broadens the user experience to include not only entertainment content, but also up-to-the minute news, stock information, weather updates, photo management and more by simply using the TV's remote control,' said LG USA marketing vice president Peter Reiner. -- AFP

No mobile signal @ Jurong Point NTUC Xtra

Yesterday, I went to the newly opened Jurong Point 2. It is brightly lit and shops are opened. While I was right outside NTUC Xtra, I am still able to get a 5 bar reception on M1 network. Once I move further in, I am practially with no signal coverage. The phone just shows "For emergency calls only".
