Fox International Channels (FIC) has renewed its carriage deal with StarHub in Singapore for its channels and services such as Nat Geo Wild, which is adding Malay- and Tamil-language options for the region.

Fox International Channels (FIC) has renewed its carriage deal with StarHub in Singapore for its channels and services such as Nat Geo Wild, which is adding Malay- and Tamil-language options for the region.

The deal includes STAR Movies, National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo Wild, STAR World, FOX, FX, FOX Family Movies, Channel [V] International, Channel [V] Taiwan, Channel [V] China, STAR Chinese Movies, STAR Vijay, STAR Plus, tvN, Phoenix Chinese Channel and Sky News. Eight channels of the FIC HD channel bouquet are part of StarHub's HD offerings to viewers in Singapore.

As part of the renewal deal, Malay- and Tamil-language tracks will be made available to viewers of Nat Geo Wild starting today. These language tracks are in addition to the currently available English and Mandarin audio, making Nat Geo Wild the first channel in Singapore available in all four official languages in the country.

“We are delighted to continue our long-standing partnership with FIC—a network that offers so much choice, quality programming and iconic channel brands geared towards the Singapore viewers’ entertainment taste and needs,” said Neil Montefiore, the CEO of StarHub. “We are confident and committed to bringing a best-in-class, enhanced TV viewing experience to every Singapore home and our renewal with FIC is another testimony of that commitment.”

“We've had a fantastic working relationship with StarHub in the past; our collective journey has seen many milestones in delivering quality content to our viewers in Singapore,” added Ward Platt, the president for the Asia Pacific and Middle East at Fox International Channels. “This continuation of our collaboration with StarHub supports our efforts in providing compelling and entertaining content that resonates with Singaporean audiences—with more choice, more localisation and language dubbing and enhanced services.”

The non-exclusive deal also marks the first major renewal for carriage of channels and services in Singapore under the new media market conduct code as set out by the Media Development Authority of Singapore.

Apart from cross- carriage of exclusive content, non-exclusive content deals present another means for a greater variety of content to be made available to consumers. StarHub's viewers can look forward to enjoying great content and entertainment from Fox International Channels.”

Added Montefiore, “While industry watchers have been waiting to see how the new cross carriage regime will pan out for local pay-TV operators, StarHub will continue to focus on securing good quality content and developing long-lasting relationships with our content partners. With the FIC deal in place for the next few years, our customers can look forward to the widest range of content, enhanced TV experience and greater value from StarHub, they can be assured of it being delivered over the best quality network and supported by a dedicated customer service team.”

Apple announces features of IOS 5.0; comes with 200 new features and native twitter integration

New Version of iOS Includes Notification Center, iMessage, Newsstand, Twitter Integration Among 200 New Features

Available to iPhone, iPad & iPod touch Users This Fall

SINGAPORE―June 7, 2011―Apple® today previewed iOS 5, the latest version of the world’s most advanced mobile operating system, and released a beta version to iOS Developer Program members. The iOS 5 beta release includes over 200 new features that will be available to iPhone®, iPad® and iPod touch® users this fall. New iOS 5 features include: Notification Center, an innovative way to easily view and manage notifications in one place without interruption; iMessage, a new messaging service that lets you easily send text messages, photos and videos between all iOS devices; and Newsstand, a new way to purchase and organise your newspaper and magazine subscriptions. With the new PC Free feature, iOS 5 users can activate and set up their iOS device right out of the box and get software updates over the air with no computer required.

“iOS 5 has some great new features, such as Notification Center, iMessage and Newsstand and we can’t wait to see what our developers do with its 1,500 new APIs,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Perhaps iOS 5’s paramount feature is that it’s built to seamlessly work with iCloud in the Post PC revolution that Apple is leading.”

With iOS 5 and iCloud®, you just enter your Apple ID and password and iCloud will seamlessly integrate with your apps to automatically and wirelessly keep all of your mail, contacts, calendars, photos, apps, books, music and more, up-to-date across all your devices without ever having to connect to a computer.

Notification Center provides iOS 5 users with an innovative way to easily access all notifications―text messages, missed calls, calendar alerts, app alerts and more, all in one place, from anywhere in iOS 5. When they arrive, notifications appear briefly at the top of the screen without interrupting what you’re doing. With one swipe you can see all your notifications, and a simple tap will take you right to its app for more detail. Notifications also appear on the lock screen, with the ability to be taken to the notifying app with just one swipe.

Newsstand is a beautiful, easy-to-organise bookshelf displaying the covers of all your newspaper and magazine subscriptions in one place. A new section of the App Store™ features just subscription titles, and allows users to quickly find the most popular newspapers and magazines in the world. If subscribed to, new issues appear in the Newsstand and are updated automatically in the background so you always have the latest issue and the most recent cover art.

Safari is the world’s most popular mobile browser, and with iOS 5 it’s now even better. New features include Safari® Reader, which gets all the clutter out of the way and sets the right font size on a web page, so you can easily scroll and read through a story; Reading List, so you can save articles to read later and they automatically show up on all your iOS devices; and Tabbed Browsing, which makes it easy to flip between multiple web pages on iPad.

iOS 5 includes built-in Twitter integration, so you can sign in once and then tweet directly from all your Twitter-enabled apps, including Photos, Camera, Safari, YouTube and Maps with a single tap. New APIs give third party developers the ability to take advantage of the single sign-on capability for their own iOS 5 apps.

iMessage in iOS 5 brings the functionality of iPhone messaging to all of your iOS devices―iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Built right into the Messages app, iMessage allows you to easily send text messages, photos, videos or contact information to a person or a group on other iOS 5 devices over Wi-Fi or 3G. iMessages are automatically pushed to all your iOS 5 devices, making it easy to maintain one conversation across your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. iMessage also features delivery and read receipts, typing indication and secure end-to-end encryption.

The new Reminders app helps you manage your tasks; create and group related tasks together; and set time or location-based reminder alerts, priorities and due dates, so you can be reminded of a task as its deadline approaches, or when you arrive or depart a given location. Reminders can also be viewed in iCal® and Outlook and are updated automatically.

New features in the Camera and Photos apps give you instant access to the camera right from the lock screen, and you can use the volume-up button to quickly snap a photo. Optional grid lines help line up your shot and a simple tap locks focus and exposure on one subject. The new Photos app lets you crop, rotate, enhance and remove red-eye, and organise your photos into albums right on your device to share them on the go.

With the new PC Free feature, iOS 5 users can activate and set up their iOS device right out of the box with no computer required, and iOS software updates are delivered over the air and installed with just a tap. Wi-Fi Sync in iOS 5 transfers and backs up your content securely over SSL and wirelessly syncs purchased content from your device to your iTunes® library.

Additional new features in iOS 5 include:

■Game Center, now with the ability to add photos to your profile, purchase new games from within the Game Center app and easier ways to find friends and new games;
■Mail enhancements which include the ability to compose messages using draggable addresses, and a new formatting bar with bold, italics, underline and indention controls;
■AirPlay® Mirroring to wirelessly display everything you do on your iPad 2 right on your HDTV through Apple TV®; and
■a system-wide split keyboard to make it even easier to type on your iPad.

The iOS 5 beta software and SDK are available immediately for iOS Developer Program members at developer.apple.com. iOS 5 will be available as a free software update for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 2, iPad, iPod touch (fourth generation) and iPod touch (third generation) this fall. Our favourite tech site is doing their news coverage of the Computex Taipei 2011 Tech Show. Just came across some of the new products to be lanuched and I am very excited about it.

Over there is a daily updated list of links and items which you can check on. They include motherboards, tablets, gadgets etc.

Here is the Computex 2011 daily news coverage

Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3 motherboard with mSATA PCIe SSD interface

According to OCWorkbench Facebook fanpage, Gigabyte will introduce a new Z68 board with Intel Smart Response Technology using a PCIe based SSD connector at the centre of the mainboard. According to the post, the Z68XP-UD3 will be showcased at Computex Taipei 2011 trade show to be held next week in Taipei, Taiwan.

From the looks of the board, this board supports both SLI and CrossFireX. It also has 1394, Realtek 8 ch audio,  Dual BIOS, Dolby Home Theatre, Etrontech powered USB 3.0, DES, On/Off Charge and features a 2x copper PCB.

This is the upcoming Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3. This new board has a new feature mSATA. If you look at the centre of the mainboard, you will see a PCIe slot socket where you can insert a PCIe based SSD.

With the SSD, the Intel Smart Response System can be enabled just like any Z68 board. Instead of using a SATA port and hook it up with a SSD ...as the "cache", it now uses the PCIe based SSD.

Unfortunately such SSDs are not readily available off the shelves in this part of the world. I feel that such design is more suitable for notebooks.

French Open in 3D on Starhub Channel 258

French Open And 2011 Copa America On Your Television Screens Starting This June
- StarHub presents French Open in 3D to all residential TV customers for the first time -

- StarHub secures broadcast rights to 2011 Copa America -

Singapore, 24 May 2011 – StarHub TV today announced an exciting line-up of key sports events to whet the appetites of sports fanatics in the coming months. For the first time ever, viewers in Singapore will be able to catch the French Open Finals in 3D on StarHub TV, in the comfort of their own homes. StarHub TV will also once again air the 2011 Copa America starting the first week of July.

Roland Garros French Open

The French Open, more commonly known as Roland Garros, is one of the most popular tournaments in the tennis calendar. The 2011 event recently premiered on Racquet Channel (StarHub TV Channel 211). Defending champion Rafael Nadal, who has won the Men’s Singles title at five editions of the French Open, may have to give up his crown this time to make way for current World No. 2 Novak Djokovic. Djokovic defeated Nadal twice on clay this year – once at the recent Rome Masters and the other earlier in Madrid this year. Will the Djok make it an unprecedented hat-trick of clay court victories over Nadal and secure his first Grand Slam on clay; will the Muscles of Mallorca run himself ragged to salvage his clay court season and take an unprecedented sixth Roland Garros title, or will World No. 3 Roger Federer take the world by surprise and snatches the title from the two hot favourites?

“To be able to telecast the French Open Finals in 3D is a milestone for StarHub. We are glad that we can bring this tournament to our sports-fanatic customers in the comfort of their own homes while they enjoy the ‘live’ experience. We are certain the viewing pleasures of our customers will be enhanced richly as they watch the highly anticipated clay court action of the year happening right before their very eyes in 3D,” said Ms Sandie Lee, StarHub’s Vice President of Content Services.

For the first time, StarHub TV Sports Group customers with a 3DTV set will be able to catch the French Open Men’s and Women’s Singles Finals ‘live’ in 3D on Sports 3D (StarHub TV Channel 258). Interested Sports Group customers will require a HubStation HD, HD Interactive or HD set-top box to watch the matches in 3D. For more information on how to tune in to the matches ‘LIVE’ in 3D, please refer to Annex 1.

2011 Copa America

Making its return to StarHub TV this year, the Copa America tournament is likened to be the UEFA Euro of South America. This year’s Copa America will see 10 South American countries and two invited teams taking part in the tournament, whereby the winner will go on to represent South America at the 2013 Confederations Cup. The participating countries are Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela while the two invited teams are from Costa Rica and Mexico.

Football Channel (StarHub TV Channel 222) will air all 26 matches ‘live’ from 1 to 24 July 2011. Football fans can expect to catch stars like Lionel Messi, Robinho, Diego Forlan and Antonio Valencia in action at the upcoming tournament and cheer their favourite teams on. Defending champions Brazil will be in for a tough fight with first runner-up Argentina in the 43rd edition of the Copa America tournament.

“To entice the sports fans further, Copa America will be played throughout the month of July. As the sole broadcaster of this tournament in Singapore, we are glad to offer our customers the UEFA Euro of South America and catch the highly anticipated performance of world class players from renowned teams,” added Ms Lee.

Both French Open and 2011 Copa America are available on Sports HD (StarHub TV Channel 255) and are available online at www.starhub.com/beentertained. Existing customers using a HubStation, HubStation HD or HD Interactive set-top box may add the Sports Group by simply tuning in to any of the channels in the Sports Group, and pressing the blue button on their remote controls to subscribe to start viewing the channels instantly. The public who wish to take on a StarHub TV package may call 1630 or visit www.starhub.com/tv for more information.

Annex 1

How to watch a ‘live’ 3D programme?

· Tune to the designated channel showing the 3D programme. You will see two side-by-side images on the channel.

· If you do not have 3D TV sets, you will not be able to view the programme in 3D. Simply tune to the channel that is showing the programme in 2D.

· For customers with 3D TV sets, you can press the “3D” button on your TV set remote control to set your TV set to 3D mode. As the steps may differ among the 3D TV sets from the various TV manufacturers, we would recommend you to refer to your TV manual on the exact procedures.

· Select the “Side-by-side” mode in your 3D settings, after confirmation, the screen will display a “Blurred” image.

Intel Corp.’s (INTC) chief executive said the chip giant remains committed to its MeeGo operating system and doesn’t believe ARM Holdings PLC (ARMH) will be competing in servers anytime soon

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Intel Corp.’s (INTC) chief executive said the chip giant remains committed to its MeeGo operating system and doesn’t believe ARM Holdings PLC (ARMH) will be competing in servers anytime soon.

Intel partner Nokia Corp. (NOK) said last week that it was shifting strategy to adopt Microsoft Corp.’s (MSFT) Windows Phone as its main smartphone platform rather than MeeGo–something Intel Chief Executive Paul Otellini characterized as a financial decision on the part of Nokia Chief Executive Stephen Elop.

“Between Microsoft and Google [Inc. (GOOG)], he was getting incredible offers [of] money,” Otellini said at an investor conference in London.

But Otellini said he wouldn’t have made the same decision to sell himself to the highest bidder and if not staying with MeeGo, would have gone with Google’s operating system.

“I probably would have gone to Android if I were him,” he said. “MeeGo would have been the best strategy for him, but he concluded he couldn’t afford it.”

StarHub TV Expands Its Suite of Sports Line-up To Include Rugby

Singapore, 17 February 2011 – StarHub announced today that it has secured the broadcast rights to various rugby events, including Six Nations Championships, Tri Nations and Super Rugby, otherwise known as Super 15. The rights were acquired from international sports broadcaster, Setanta Sports. With this latest coup, StarHub TV will offer rugby fans top-notched rugby matches which are highly sought after.

The Six Nations Championship has over a decade of history involving six European nations, namely England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales, and is held yearly in the northern hemisphere. France has won this Championship five times in the last decade and the nation is currently tied in first position with England.

Tri Nations is contested annually by the Australian Wallabies, New Zealand All Blacks and South African Springboks. These three teams have been dominating international rankings in recent years and many consider the Tri Nations to be the toughest championship in the world of rugby. Super Rugby, the largest rugby union competition held in the southern hemisphere annually, comprises 15 teams from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa and is typically held from February to July. StarHub TV Sports Group customers will be able to catch up to 125 ‘live’ matches for this season’s Super Rugby.
