Mediacorp DVB-T2 broadcasts transmits 4 channels in HD and screen captures

Many readers are wondering, how do I go about receiving the Mediacorp HD broadcast over the air ? Well, you will need the Draco DVB-T2 set to box which is available at electronic retail stores at a hefty price tag of S$129.

Some adventurous people will buy alternative set to box which are also DVB-T2 compliant and you should be able to receive the same broadcasts if the protocols are the same.

This site has posted screen shots of the captured images and provided more information on where you can buy alternative boxes. You can check it out.

Draco DVB-T2 set top box for receiving FTA Digital HD broadcasts available for sale

Singapore's MDA has announced that Mediacorp free to air channels will go digital by year end of DEC 2013.  Unfortunately, they chose to use DVB-T2 standard abandoning the previous investments in DVB-T. Current digital TV sets with DVB-T Tuner is incompatible with this new standard.

If you are not a subscription tv subscriber (SingTel mio TV or Starhub TV) and you would like to receive the HD broadcast from Mediacorp, you would need to purchase a set top box and plug it to an external antenna.

The set top box is now available at some retail stores at Clementi Mall. The brand is Draco and it costs S$120+GST.

The price far exceeds the MDA's initial price range of S$60-S$100 or so.  According to the sales man, I am the first person to enquire about the set top box.

Will you get one ?

So, what are the good deals at the Sitex 2013. I would say it is the Fibre Broadband deals by various telcos. M1 still has the best deal so far but Starhub and Singtel isn't far behind. They are all offering bundle deals with TV. Starhub even give away a 32" LCD TV if you sign up Cable TV.

Check out the brochures for more.

M1 MiBox comes with fresh look but lacks international contents

M1 today introduces their IPTV offering with the new MiBox. Being the third telco in the market, timing is very important. These days most contents are stream through the internet. With higher speed fibre broadband, HD streaming is no longer an issue.

In fact, M1 had a first try known as 1box. It didn’t work out too well at that time.  This time round, they use the technology from vodoke. The MiBox hopes to change it by emphasising on three aspects , that is Education, Entertainment on demand and More than TV.

Education offers a collection of education content designed for preschool to secondary which is definitely a plus for students.
Entertainment on demand is more on the video contents. So far, the on demand channels include ‘iConcerts Unlimited Pass’ at S$5/mth. There are 40 over Mandarin channels provided by KyLinTV. Most of it are Mainland China programmes ranging from news to variety and drama. A number of the are delivered in High Definition.
M1 MiBox
For Korean pop culture buffs, there is KMTV channel and it provided as a free service to all MiBox users.
Another is ‘Exploring China’ which prevents hi definition documentaries of the rich historical periods of China.
For Anime viewers, there is Viki for watching Anime. SPEDA (Singapore Polytechnic Emerging Digital Artists) showcases emerging digital artist  talents from the School of Digital Media and Infocomm Technology is also free for MiBox users.

For paid channels at S$9.90/mth, there are over 45+ channels on KyLinTV. KyLinTV is a world leading IPTV service provider dedicated to servicing the overseas  Chinese communities. As the first platform that offers Chinese HD content and the largest selection of content in more than 100 popular TV channels and 30,000 hours of  VOD content from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan through multiple devices, KyLinTV currently provides 45+ of the most popular Chinese channels, including CCTV4 Asia,

Dragon TV HD, ZTV International HD, CCTV Entertainment and Hunan TV HD, in Singapore.
The MiBox is in fact an android device and it enables you to run games, YouTube, Facebook on the large TV screen. Read ebooks and Skype with friends is all possible. You can surf the web for the latest breaking news like BBC or CNN just like what you usually do on the PC.

It is to my surprised that M1 isn’t carrying the linear channels from local broadcaster e.g. 5,8,U, SURIA, Vasantham and HD5 (HD) over the network. Other than KMTV, the other channels offered are subscription based. With MDA’s cross carriage agreement, M1 should be able to cross carry those non exclusive contents like National Geographic, Star channels but they didn’t. To me it is like an upgraded version of the 1box.

So, will M1 be able to leverage on the Chinese contents or should they follow the trend like two other smaller players of enabling users to subscribing to US, UK or HK programmes without IP restrictions ?

MDA rules that Singtel must share EPL content with Starhub under its "cross-carriage" agreement

At last the next 3 seasons of EPL will be available on both Singtel and Starhub. This has been something that most football fans are looking forward to. Unfortunately, Singtel signed a NON EXCLUSIVE agreement with the provider. The MDA's cross carriage agreement was meant for "exclusive" content. So, Singtel was able to outsmart by signing a non-exclusive deal with the provider. Singtel signed a deal with FAPL and it was non exclusive. As it is non exclusive, Starhub can sign the deal with the EPL provider on their own. Apparently, it didn't work out. Starhub filed complains to MDA alleging foul play that the deal Singtel signed was actually an exclusive one. Today, in a statementm the Media Development Authority (MDA) finally ruled that SingTel must share the content with StarHub under its "cross-carriage" regime after looking into StarHub's complaints against SingTel. A spectacular meteor shower shattered windows and caused injuries in Russia’s Ural Mountains

A meteorite falls in russian urals
A spectacular meteor shower shattered windows and caused injuries in Russia’s Ural Mountains.

The meteor shower is believed to be from an asteroid as large as an Olympic swimming pool that was expected to race past the Earth on Friday at a distance of just 27,700km (17,200mi) – the closest ever predicted for an object of that size.

The powerful blast rocked the Russian region of the Urals with bright objects, identified as possible meteorites, falling from the sky, emergency officials said.
“It was definitely not a plane,” an emergency official told Reuters, without elaborating. “We are gathering the bits of information and have no data on the casualties so far.”
No one was hurt in a meteor shower, an emergency official told RIA-Novosti. Local residents said they witnessed burning objects in the sky of the Chelyabinsk and Sverdlovsk regions.
A Reuters witness in Chelyabinsk reported hearing a huge blast early in the morning and feeling a shockwave in a 19-storey building in the town center.
The sounds of car alarms and breaking windows could be heard in the area, the witness said, and mobile phones were working intermittently.
“Preliminary indications are that it was a meteorite rain,” an emergency official told RIA-Novosti. “We have information about a blast at 10,000-meter (32,800-foot) altitude. It is being verified.”
The trace from a falling object could be seen in Yekaterinburg, some 200 kilometers (125 miles) southeast of Chelyabinsk, another Reuters witness said.
